Library Policies and Procedures

The Library Media Center operates under the Mead School District Board of Directors Policy 2021 and Procedure 2021. In the board-adopted Policy 2021 and Procedure 2021, the purpose and structure are defined for the Library Media Centers at each school and Teacher-Librarians. This includes the development and assessment of the collection, suggestions for acquisition, selection of materials, considerations for de-selection and the process to request reconsideration of library media materials. 

As part of Procedure 2021, the Mead School District routinely assesses the library collections for possible de-selection of materials due to a number of factors outlined here: 

Considerations for De-selection

  1. Currency – The subject matter is out of date or no longer relevant to the instructional program;
  2. Physical Condition – Item is worn, soiled, missing pages, antiquated in appearance or unattractive
  3. Not circulating for a reasonable amount of time;
  4. Superseded by newer editions;
  5. Perpetuates cultural, ethnic, or sexual stereotypes;
  6. Inappropriate reading level; or
  7. Unneeded duplication of materials.

Elementary Library Procedures
All students visit the school library on a regular basis for book checkout, story time, information literacy skills and technology. The purpose of visiting the library is to encourage the enjoyment of reading for pleasure and obtaining & using information.

All classes come to library for 36 minutes each week. Students learn about digital citizenship, computer science and technology, literature and how to locate, evaluate, and extract information from a variety of sources. They also work on library assignments, have story time and check out books.

  • Instruction: The Library Information Technology Specialist (LITS) is responsible for teaching students critical thinking skills related to research, locating and evaluating information, as well as supporting students and staff with district curriculum initiatives and programs. 
  • Checkout / Library Materials / Overdue Notices: The library assistant handles material check-out, library fines, and day-to-day operations in the library. 

Students are able to check out up to three books at a time. They may visit the library everyday to exchange books. Materials for research and reports are often needed by intermediate students. Materials are checked out for two weeks. A book may be kept longer by renewing it. Books requested by other students will be limited to one renewal.

Students are responsible for the library materials they check out in their name. Please caution them about sharing books without returning the book first. Replacements will be required for lost books and damaged books due to mishandling. Here are some ways you can help your child be responsible when borrowing library books:

  1. Provide a backpack, book bag or plastic bag to keep books safe and dry.
  2. Have a special place at home to keep books out of reach of pets and/or younger children.
  3. Help your child return books on time.
  4. Read with your child.

Our library staff is happy to assist parents and students with special requests about books, reading, and finding information. Parents are welcome to check out materials. 

Secondary Library Procedures

Students have access to the library before and after school. Throughout the day, students may come to the library if they have a pass from their classroom teacher. Teachers may sign up for library time for students to do research, testing or to check out books. Students may have up to five books checked out from the library. Students may also sign into their library account and place books on hold for pick up later.

Classroom novels, some textbooks and chromebooks are checked out through the library. These are in addition to the five library books the student may have checked out. 

Students are responsible for the library materials they check out in their name. Please caution them about sharing books without returning the book first. Replacements will be required for lost books and damaged books due to mishandling. 

3D Printer: A 3D printer is available in each middle and high school. Students must sign up with library staff to print their designs who must also approve the project before it is printed. 

Additional maker spaces: Each library has maker spaces for students to explore their interests. Stop in and see what is available in your library.
