Mead Summer STEM Academy

1. Log in to Powerschool Parent Portal here. (Please note that Purchases and Payments are not supported in the Powerschool App. P&P must be done through a web browser.)
2. Click on Purchases and Payments on the left hand side to be transferred into InTouch Receipting.
3. Next, click on the name of the student you want to register. 
4. On the following page, click on ITEMS AT ALL SCHOOLS.
5. Click "District Office" in blue twice, and then Click on "STEM Camp 2024".
6. Click the corresponding week that you'd like to register for.
7. Click "Buy" for the desired camp for that student to add to the cart.
8. Click "Checkout" at the top of the page and proceed through registration and payment information. 
   (For those who qualify, registration rates may be reduced and will be reflected at checkout. In these cases, please complete checkout/payment information section with a credit card. If registration rate is reduced to $0, a credit card is still required to complete the process, but will not be charged.)

Each module is limited to 20 participants (12 for Vet Tech) and will be listed as "Sold Out" or "Full", however you can place a student on a waitlist to receive an email if a spot opens up. [Click here for the waitlist].

Exploring Robots - Current 2nd - 3rd graders - We will create some mechanisms, play some competitive games, remote control our robots, and generally explore what robots can do to make our world better. We will focus on building and driving skills.

*Please note that the video below outlines two separate Robotics modules, however, only "Exploring Robots" is offered to 2nd and 3rd Graders in 2024.

Grades 2-4: During the Junior Nature course we will take a closer look at some of the living things in the natural world around us! We will explore how these living things work and why they play such an important role in their environment and our world.

Grades 5-8: During the Nature course we will spend time taking an in depth look at how living things work! We will start at the EXTREMELY micro side of nature- DNA. Each day our "world" of nature will get larger and larger! We will peer into microscopic ecosystems (using microscopes!) and end with a canoe trip down the Little Spokane River, a live view of a macroscopic local ecosystem! 

This is a four-day long adventure to the outer limits! Come join us to learn about how humans first took flight, launched into space, and landed on the moon! This camp covers, but not limited to:

1. Hot Air Balloon construction and flight
2. Rocket design, build and launch
3. Entry Capsule assemble and landing
4. Visit to the Historical Flight Foundation to learn about aviation, the important innovation, and how the years 1927 to 1957 were incredible times that have helped shape the history of flight, and started the journey to the moon and beyond! Gliders included.

What better way to learn than through playing with food?! In this camp, we will take a delicious approach to investigating our world in the areas of biochemistry, alternative energy, geology and molecular gastronomy. Campers should expect to have fun and learn in a hands-on exploratory environment with tasty results.

In the Force Olympics, we will explore the various forces present on the planet - through the lens of a competition of Olympic proportions! In teams, we will create various projects that will help to solve a problem, while also learning about forces along the way. Join me as we explore forces like buoyancy, gravity, thrust, and drag through team-based problem solving and a little bit of friendly competition.

Learn how digital photography plays a role in all STEM subjects in a full blown, week long experience brought to you by Mead Summer STEM Academy! Participants will gain hands-on experience in photography basics including portraits, landscapes, long exposures, motion, and stop motion video. Canon cameras will be provided as a means to help ignite their passion and interest in the world of photography.  

Welcome to STEM Academy's Design Academy. This class is project-based learning and everything centers around the Design Process and how to use that process to create something amazing. Our younger students will start off learning to use basic power tools like the power drill and circular sanders. They will use the Design Process to build a model house and design a landscape as well as design a bridge and stress test its durability. Our older students will learn how to use larger power tools like the band saw and table saw.  They will design CO2 cars, learn essential home improvement skills like how to repair drywall, and use the Design Process to create many other things.  We look forward to having your students here with us!

Join the newest section of Summer STEM Academy. We'll spend the week exploring the geology of the amazing community we live in - yes - Spokane and the great Pacific Northwest! You'll investigate how water and rock interact to create the land features that surround us. In addition, you'll get your hands on fossils, gems, rocks and other unique rock and mineral formations; examining their structure, testing their physical properties and appreciating their awesomeness. You'll also explore how you can help take care of this ROCK we live ON, brainstorming environmental sustainability ideas that preserve the land we live on and can be put to use in our region. Finally, you'll get to finish the week with Peak 7 Adventure on a Rock Climbing expedition at Minnehaha! Don't miss out - this is your chance to truly Rock On!

In the Science in Sport module, are diving into the exciting world of fitness through a focus on both health-related and skill-related components!

 

Are you curious about how the human body works? This summer Mead STEM Academy is offering a week long Human Body Systems camp. Campers will learn about the organs and how they work together to perform a specific function. Join us in diving deeper in looking at the heart, the brain, our bones and our digestive system. The participants will learn more about these systems through a variety of FUN, engaging and interactive learning experiences.

During Vet Tech Camp we will work with a variety of different animals daily at a local rescue farm, Higher Ground Animal Sanctuary. We will learn about and implement some of the day to day care of these animals in addition to some of their more specialized care and basic medical needs. 

Video Game Academy will explore the idea that our entertainment can be both fun and useful. Students will learn to keep track of how much time they have played and different methods of moderating their game time, as well as have the opportunity to play with their teams to learn gaming etiquette. We will talk about video game and social media addiction and how it affects our daily lives, before finishing off the week with a field trip to Chaos Arcade to play video games old-school style.

Come join us for a week of fun with numbers! All 2nd-4th graders are welcome to come and play math games, compete, and try new innovative strategies to sharpen their skills. Together we will build mad math skills through a variety of strategies including launching catapults, flying airplanes, battling shape monsters and much more!
