Balanced Calendar Exploration

In the Mead School District, our commitment is to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive. As part of this commitment, district administrators created the Calendar Exploration Committee, which is a group of about two dozen teachers, parents, community members and administrators from across the district.

This group was tasked with researching, reviewing and discussing calendar changes made or recently adopted by neighboring and regional school districts to examine how similar shifts to our calendar could impact our students, staff, and community. By exploring options, gathering insights from other districts and sharing information, the group can help inform district leadership about possibilities, considerations, concerns and support for academic calendar changes.

Key Inputs

The Calendar Exploration Committee has considered a number of different inputs throughout the process, including:

  • Regional research from area school districts: collected current and future calendars,  gathered feedback from administrators who plan to implement calendar changes and experience from those have already implemented calendar changes
  • Attendance data review: reviewed historical attendance data for both students and staff
  • Conducted community and student surveys to gather feedback from parents/guardians, staff members and students
  • Compiled survey data based on top benefits and concerns
  • Mapped out possible calendar options based on future yearly calendars

Community Surveys

As part of the community engagement process for the Calendar Exploration Committee, the group created two surveys: one for adults (parents and teachers) and one for students.
