Kindergarten and Transition to Kindergarten Info
Kindergarten, Transition To Kindergarten (TTK) and Preschool (ECEAP and Developmental) students are not permitted to exit the school bus until a parent or guardian is present or visible to the bus driver. If anyone other than the parent/guardian will pick-up the child from the bus stop, including a sibling, a the appropriate Release Form (provided below) must be completed and returned to the bus driver or transportation office. This form must also be completed if the parent/guardian authorizes the driver to drop-off the student with no one present.
Transition To Kindergarten (TTK) - Bus Information
As part of our TTK program, the Mead School District is committed to offering busing as a transportation option for families who need access in order for their child to participate in TTK. As families are considering if this option is right for their TTK student, please review the following items:
-
For TTK bus riders: Given the number of routes needed and the number of bus drivers available, MSD will be offering “hub” bus stops for neighborhoods in the Midway Elementary and Colbert Elementary TTK attendance areas. It is possible that these hub stops will be a bit further away from a family’s residence than a regular K-12 bus stop would be.
-
Seat belts are not available on our school buses.
-
A parent/guardian or designated adult must be present at a TTK child’s bus stop for both before-school pickup and after-school dropoff. This is a requirement that is unique to TTK bus riders and must be acknowledged by filling out the form below in addition to the Bus Registration form.
-
TTK Bus Riders are required to fill out BOTH the registration form and the TTK/Preschool Release Form.
Bus Tag Policy for Kindergarten and Transition to Kindergarten
To ensure the safety of our Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten students, each student will have a color-coded tag attached to their backpack, indicating their permission to walk home:
-
Green Tag: For Kindergarten students who have permission to walk home alone from their bus stop.
-
Yellow Tag: For Kindergarten students who have permission to walk home with a sibling, relative, buddy, or neighbor.
-
Red Tag: For Kindergarten/Transition to Kindergarten students who must be received by an adult at the bus stop.
Important Reminders:
- Ensure that your child’s tag is securely attached and visible at all times. This helps our bus drivers and staff follow the correct procedure for each student.
- Your cooperation is essential in keeping our youngest students safe and ensuring a smooth and secure arrival and departure process.

Is my child eligible to ride the school bus?
It depends on where you live. All bus stops are outside suggested walk areas unless hazardous conditions are identified or other special circumstances are identified that require stops within walk areas. Students in grades K-12 who reside outside suggested walk areas will be transported to school from their assigned pick-up/drop-off location.
How do I arrange for my child to ride the school bus?
Click here to find your child's bus stop. Call the Transportation office during normal business hours at 509-465-6107 to set up service. Families with students that have special needs should contact the Special Services department at 509-465-7600.
Will the district transport my child to and from a daycare facility?
If you use a childcare facility (daycare) that is both (1) within the school attendance area your child attends and (2) outside the school's suggested walk area and space is available on the bus, daycare students may ride the school bus. No stops will be added and no routes will be altered in order to accommodate daycare students. Please contact the transportation office (509-465-6107) to check your child's eligibility for daycare school bus transportation. To determine eligibility the Transportation Department will need the exact address of the childcare facility.
Can my child ride the bus to private music lessons, scouts, study groups or employment (non-curricular activities)?
The Mead School District is funded to transport students only from home to school and from school to home. No requests for personalized busing services will be considered (i.e. transportation to birthday parties, music lessons, scouts, study groups, employment, etc.). Additionally, bus routing and stops will not be modified to accommodate any business or private enterprise.
How are bus stops determined?
Routes are designed to serve all students in an area in a safe and reasonable manner. Every effort is made to establish school bus stops near where students live. Additional considerations include keeping stops consistent for morning and afternoon routes. At the middle and high school level the number of stops on a route typically decreases and student may need to walk a bit further than they did in elementary school. Stop locations and distances may also vary depending on the number of students in the area and the area type (urban/rural) being served.
How do I request a bus stop be added or changed?
To request a bus stop be added or changed, please complete the form here: Request for Change/New Bus Stop. Each request is evaluated, which often includes a visit to the area by transportation administrators before a decision on the request is made. If a stop change is approved it typically takes 3-5 school days to implement. This allows us to notify other riders of the change and, when necessary, a bus or buses to be rerouted.
My child has been assigned to another elementary school because of overcrowding. Will the district provide transportation to and from the new school?
My child has been approved for an intra-district transfer to attend another Mead SD school. Will the district provide transportation to this choice school?
It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to transport their child to the choice school. However, if there is a bus route in the area; room on the existing bus for the student; no additional stop required to pick up the student; and if the transportation is provided on a DAILY basis, the Transportation Department can make an exception and transport the student. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to transport their child to the existing bus stop, which is where they will be picked-up and dropped-off each day. Please contact the transportation office (509-465-6107) to inquire about space availability.
I have a special needs child. How do I arrange for transportation services?
This decision is made through the special education team process. Once the IEP team has determined there is a need for specialized transportation, a request is filled out from the Special Services Department. The transportation office will add your child to a specialized transportation bus route and provide you with bus information.
Are school buses safe?
The school bus passes right by my house. Why can't the driver stop and pick up my child?
Are there areas or roads where no bus service is provided?
Can a parent or other adult ride the school bus?
How can I become a school bus driver?
Are there items that are NOT ALLOWED on school buses?
Yes . . . To keep students safe and to follow state law, the following items are not allowed on a school bus:
- Oversized objects, such as athletic equipment and large musical instruments that cannot fit safely on a student's lap or between their legs in a seat. Large objects restrict a student's ability to board the bus without harming themselves and others or damaging the bus. State law (WAC 392-145-021) requires objects to sit lower than the window ledge, which is approximately 29 inches high in a school bus.
- Glass objects such as bottles or jars.
- Open containers of food and drink or gum.
- Items that do not fit securely in a backpack: skateboards, balloons, etc.

How are bus stops determined?
Bus stops are determined based on state safety, regulations, school district policy, student walking distances, neighborhood conditions, and route efficiency. Transportation staff utilize a combination of routing software, safety assessments, and policy standards to establish stops that are safe, practical, and equitable for students. As routes and stops are established, transportation staff takes into account locations of students' homes, the number of students in an area, the rural or urban nature of the area, consistency in stop locations for morning and afternoon routes and the age of students that may need to walk to the stop. Typically at the middle and high school levels, the number of stops on a route is less than at the elementary level, requiring some older students to walk to a different stop location than when they were in elementary school.
In extreme cases, the director or assistant director may grant a change or add to a bus route. Each request is evaluated, which includes a visit to the area by the transportation directors and input from the Routing Committee, before a decision on the request is made. If a stop change is approved, it typically takes 5 to 7 school days to implement. This allows us to notify other riders of the change and, when necessary, re-route buses.
