Mt. Spokane on the list...again!
Each year, NEWSWEEK picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests.
Mt. Spokane and Mead both made the list once again. It includes the best 2,000 high schools in the nation. "Those that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads." Congratulations to both schools on this outstanding accomplishment.

WHAT A NIGHT!

[Note: Cross-posted at Mr. Nelson's Blog with more pictures] The annual Spokane Scholars award banquet was held at the Spokane Convention Center on Monday, April 22, and Mt. Spokane High School absolutely stole the show. With four awards given in six disciplines including Social Studies, English , Science, Math, Fine Arts and World Language, MSHS nominees won three of the six first-place awards and also earned a second-place award. This was a historic showing for our school, and everyone in attendance was speaking about Mt. Spokane.
Mt. Spokane nominees included Natalie Pilgeram (Social Studies), Leah Wurst (Math), John Babb (Fine Arts), Patrick Mudd (Science), Emily Stephens (World Languages) and Carter Bastian (English). During the award presentation, Leah Wurst placed second in mathematics and earned a $3000.00 award. Our three first-place award winners were Natalie Pilgeram in Social Studies, Carter Bastian in English and Emily Stephens in World Languages. Each of these students earned a $4000.00 award.
The 2013 Spokane Scholars banquet will be remembered for many reasons, but my lasting memories are focused on the pure joy that was evident on the faces of our students, parents and staff members. Truly, the passion and excitement that emanated from all six of our candidates was palpable, and the celebrations that ensued after each presentation were extremely rewarding to witness.
Thanks to everyone who was involved! What a great night to be a part of the Mt. Spokane High School community!

Summer + School = Success
Summer is near and besides longer days and plans for family vacations, it also means that summer school is just around the corner. The Mead School District will once again be offering summer school classes for secondary students to help meet the student’s needs in the ever increasing world of academic demands.
There are multiple purposes for the inclusion of summer school in the district’s instructional platform. Some students have schedules that are so crowded that they need the summer to complete requirements and for that reason we offer a Creative Writing class, a Video Editing class, and a Photography class. Creative Writing fulfills an English credit, and Video Editing and Photography are art credits. For students who were not successful in a class or who wish to improve their grade in a class, we offer courses in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies as credit retrieval classes. [continued]

Celebrating Academic Success
We have so much to celebrate at Mt. Spokane High School! And celebrate we do: extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, dedicated staff, wonderful families who send us their beloved children, and a community who supports us through thick and thin.
One of the most public celebrations in our school is the twice-yearly Honor Roll Celebration, when 300+ students are honored for their success in the classroom. Behind the scenes of this tah-dah are the teachers, support staff, parents/guardians, and community members who believe in kids.
Our academic booster club, the CATS Group, raises funds, organizes, serves, and carries out the multitude of details to celebrate hard working, academically-focused Wildcat youth. Thank you all for your role in assisting students reach their academic goals, and congratulations students.

AVOID TRUANCIES
An Important Reminder Regarding Unexcused Absences:
Students are truant when they are absent and an appropriate excuse is not turned into the attendance office within 24 hours. Students with truancies will be given a discipline referral as per the truancy policy. If your student misses school, please send a written excuse or call the attendance hotline at 465-7280 as soon as possible. Students with absences that remain unexcused for longer than 24 hours may be subject to a discipline referral for lack of compliance with the truancy policy.

PowerSchool
PowerSchool allows you to view information about your child, including attendance, lunch balance, email notifications, and demographics. If your child is in grade 7-12, you will also have access to their grades. The most accurate reflection of your child's grade is to view the grade under the current semester, S1 for first semester or S2 for 2nd semester.
The PowerSchool hyperlink can be found under the Quicklinks at the top of the page or by clicking on the picture below.
Many parents are starting to use eMail notifications. Log in to your parent access account by using the link above to get started.
